One of a kind, hand sculpted ceramic altars. The altars are about 5 inches tall. They have a space for a tea light candle. They may also be used to hold other objects such as jewelry, business cards, etc.

The inspiration for each altar arises spontaneously from “being with” the clay. As I massage the clay, I open myself to sense the being that is being born. As the clay takes form, I invoke and invite an expression of an inner state of my soul to come forth so that I may see it. In this way, the altar reflects a state or quality of True Presence.

Dakini Rakuing at night

The statues are glazed using a variation on an ancient Japanese process called Raku. The body of the statue is left unglazed (“Naked Raku”) and smoked to a deep black. The “robes” that drape the statues are an exciting vibrant combination of colors, ranging from blue greens to deep reds with copper highlights. The glazes consist of copper oxide as well as other minerals.

Here is a brief description of the Raku process. After being bisqued (first firing), the glaze is applied and the pieces are put into a kiln. They are brought to 1750° Fahrenheit. At this time, the kiln is opened to reveal a glowing atmosphere. The glaze is molten and the pieces are removed from the kiln with tongs and placed in a pot filled with sand, sawdust, and newspaper. The clay pieces, newspaper, and sawdust immediately burst into flames. Then the pot is covered, depriving the fire of oxygen. The fire draws the oxides out of the glaze, and this produces the copper effect. It is a very dramatic process, which yields very dramatic and interesting results.

Later, by lighting a candle in the finished altar, one is able to see and sense the state, quality, or capacity that one longs to manifest in oneself. In this way, one is supported in actualizing the state. Simply invoking a quality or state may not be sufficient to manifest that state. You may want to meditate and/or use inquiry and journaling to explore your relationship with the quality in order to understand what the obstacles are to manifesting it. You may want to say a prayer or invocation as you light the candle. You may use the Godess invocation or create your own.

The Goddess invocation is as follows.

We invoke the presence of the Goddess
As her priestess, I dedicate myself to the embodiment of love and truth

(You may order a copy of the Goddess Invocation booklet for a detailed explanation of each phrase. The Goddess Invocation booklet also includes exercises you can do to work with the invocation.)
